The Return of the DISEASES!
There are lots of effects concerning diseases due to climate change. For example, in Toronto,Canada, an 82 year old man died of West Nile Virus from a mosquito that migrated from the equator due to climate change. The West Nile Virus was first seen in The United States and Canada seven years ago. It has infected more than 21,000 people and killed more than 800 of those infected. Other tropical diseases have been spotted in Canada, and according to Douglas Elliot, “These diseases are here to stay.” Cholera has also been found, as well as Malaria.
North America isn’t the only continent with diseases as a result of climate change. In Peru, every four years, there has been a recorded case of Bartonellosis, or the “Carrion’s disease.” Children with Bartonellosis have had very high fevers, and bleeding leg lesions. Dr. Larry Laughin investigated why this was happening, and he found out why this was occuring every four years. It turns out that this disease hits when the Pacific Ocean’s current increases the temperature in the water and the air.
According to the New York Academy of sciences, “Climate change combined with increased global mobility is resulting in previously unforeseen evolution of newly emerging infectious diseases worldwide, reemergence of diseases previously under control and redistribution of diseases across the planet.” Climate change has been affecting many things, widespread diseases is not an exception.

I found this really interesting and weird because i had no idea that diseases that are from other countries are coming here to the USA and Canada. Especially due to climate change. I liked how you put in the quotes from the article or the website you got your information from.
Posted May 6, 2010, 8:23 pm #This was very informative. I didn’t know that West Nile Virus started only seven years ago. It seems like so much longer! I also didn’t know that 800 people have died from it. I find it very interesting, that mosquitos migrate here from as far away as the equator! That is so gross! I think it showed that you really understood your topic. Nice job!

Posted May 7, 2010, 8:16 am #I definitely didin’t know that climate change could be causing the spread of diseases. Did West Nile used to be in the U.S. and Canada, or is this the first time the disease has spread here? Also, I have to say it’s almost amazing that mosquitos could fly to Canada all the way from the equator.
Posted May 10, 2010, 8:48 am #I found your post very interesting. I thought of a few questions while reading this article. How is climate change a factor to the spread of diseases? How do the diseases travel? It would be great if you could answer these. I wondered how all these works. Overall I found this article quite awesome.
